In Gi classes, students wear the traditional kimono (jacket, pants, and belt). The Gi allows for grip based techniques you can grab your opponent’s sleeves, collar, or pants to control, sweep, or submit.
In No-Gi, you wear athletic gear like a rash guard and shorts. There are no clothing grips, so techniques rely more on body control, underhooks, and movement based strategies. It’s often faster and more explosive.
At Smash & Flow, we train both Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu because each style teaches different aspects of the game and helps you become a more complete grappler.
Whether you want to compete, get in shape, or just challenge yourself, understanding the difference helps you choose where to start and why both are worth exploring.
